gelato returns

What a beautiful place, this northern Italian city... where you mark the passage of time by the opening and closing of the gelateria. With carnival and the promise of spring, they open now after a four month hibernation. One by one, day by day you spy the random person walking down the street sucking up the sweet nectar of a drippy cone of gelato. And even though it's still cold, the four of us went out for our inaugural treat Monday night. We arrived a bit late, the doors having just been closed, bins being put away. But the gelato lady saw our four pairs of wide gelato eyes staring through the window and waved for us to wait, she'd let us in. Four delicious cones served up and she even knocked a few euros off the price. And we walked that slow lick by lick walk through the quiet streets. And a cold night somehow seemed warmer.

  2. Hmm, that means any minute now the production is going to start up again here too.

Best bit of the run up to the end of winter and the beginning of spring, a huge dollop of homemade(ish) TMS icecream thwocked into my super thick hot chocolate all topped off with a squirt of cream.

That should take my mind off the rain, the rain and more or the sodding rain, which might become snow if I whinge so I will shut up now.

Am I the only one who feels knocked for six by the length and crappy weatheredness of this miserable winter we have had this year ?

  5. Wonderful! I miss the fresh fish shop when she closes between Christmas and Carnevale. Six long weeks without fish caught last night!

  6. I'm so jealous, our local soft serve shop doesn't open until March. I cannot wait for spring!

Also, you should check out my post today. It should be of some interest to you. ;)

  8. The first time I ever had gelato was in Germany where they called it Italian Ice -- they didn't have ice cream at all back then, just this gelato. It came with a wafer and whipped cream. It was the most awesome thing I'd ever tasted. So, I was so excited when Canada got gelato...but alas, it wasn't the same
